Kohala Kayak Discovery Tour (3 1/2 Hours)

A Guided Tour with Snorkeling & Kayaking

There Is No Experience Necessary to Participate, but Swimming Skills Are Suggested for All Participants.

Kohala Kayak is a family-owned-and-operated business providing guided kayaking and snorkeling tours along the South Kohala coastline of the Big Island of Hawaii. Here, discover the coral gardens of Puako Reef, a marine sanctuary, where green sea turtles feed among multicolored fish. They offer a safe and friendly environment for you and your family to enjoy while learning about our area and ocean life.

Expect to see a live coral reef with an abundant assortment of colorful reef fish. The variety of tropical fish is remarkable. Water depth is about 20 feet. Water temperature is at 75º from November to March and at 80º from April to October. Visibility (depending on ocean swell) will be clear. We spend about 30 to 40 minutes at this site exploring the area. Resident green sea turtles hang out in this area. Once out of the water, a snack will be served. Casual discussion on coral reef ecology and questions answered on what was seen will then be held. After a snack, kayak about 1/2 mile to second snorkel site (2 different sites-weather dependent). Same routine as first.

Schedule

8:45—Guests meet at the Puako Boat Ramp.

9:00—Orientation—participants outfitted with snorkeling gear and given a brief orientation on paddling technique. Load the kayaks and launch.

9:15 to 12:00—Once on the water, the group will paddle about 1 mile (30 minutes) to first snorkeling site. An orientation on how to use snorkeling gear will be given for those needing it. This is especially important for first time snorkelers, so that they will be comfortable viewing fish in the water (buoyant snorkel vests available). Otherwise, experienced snorkelers can start on their own.

12:00 to 12:30—Paddle straight back to the boat ramp

All Tours Include the Following:
Certified lifeguard tour guide - Double kayaks with all necessary equipment - Plastic identification cards to take in the water - Hotel pickup & drop-offs at all Waikoloa & South Kohala resort hotels (exclusive to groups of 8 or more) - Healthy snacks - Snorkel gear - Bottled water - Equipment & tour orientation
Cooler with beverages

Keauhou Sea Cave Tour

Kayaking is Eco-adventuring at its best.
AVAILABLE MONDAY - SATURDAY: check-in 8:15am, return 12noon - EXCEPT TUESDAYS: check-in 9:15am, return 1:00pm.

We invite you to sample our Aloha and explore Kona's famous warm, clear waters in an up close and personal way. No experience is necessary. All that it is required is a desire to have fun and average fitness.

Guided adventures are led by Hawaii Lifeguard Certified, insured, and licensed kayakers.

Ocean Safaris provide full instruction on paddling, water safety, and local history. Trips include snorkel gear, snacks, Hawaiian juice and bottled water. If you choose a guided tour it is recommended you bring the following: sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, footgear (tevas, rock socks, tennis shoes).

What to expect to see and do on a guided adventure...

After checking in, we outfit your personal kayak, (single or tandem) with lifejackets, backrests, paddles, snorkel gear and bottled water. We help you launch into calm and picturesque Keauhou Bay where we conduct a group instruction. The itinerary is as follows:

After leaving Keauhou Bay (birthplace of Kamehameha the Great) we head south along the cliffs toward Kuamoo Bay. Along this stretch we look for dolphins, manta rays and turtles. There are interesting arches and blow holes along the cliffs. In Kuamoo Bay, we head for a sea cave that often allows us inside to explore its pink walls and aqua Waters. Often times this cave catches ocean swells that makes this stop an exciting highlight of our adventure. Leaving Kuamoo Bay, we follow the coastline, and paddle over coral gardens and underwater lava tubes, till we arrive at the next cave which is almost always calm and cool. This is a dry lava tube above the cave that extends deep into the earth (if you want to go in bring a flashlight).

Now we head to the next cave which sits in a protected, clear, calm cove. We drop anchor here and raft our kayaks together. Ample time is allowed to snorkel the reefs. The tropical fish are abundant, and if you look, you may see: octopus, uhu (parrotfish), yellow tang, butterflies, wrasse, or even a crown of thorns. Exiting the water here, we climb up to a vantage point above the cove where we enjoy our snacks and cold drinks. We may even have wild parrots fly overhead as we eat. Often we walk over to the tide pools to watch the eels hunting A'ama crabs.

From our vantage point above the cove, the water looks clear and tempts many to jump off the 12 to 25 ft. cliffs into the water below. The water is plenty deep and safe. Many scaredy cats even jump off and end up doing the jump many times. Good photo opportunities may include catching mom or the kids jumping off a cliff in Kona!

After a refreshing break of an hour or so, we pack up and head off shore where we hope to ride the trade winds home. Arrival time back in Keauhou is at 12:00 noon (time for lunch and a nap at the beach).
